Likeability

I heard a podcast yesterday with motivational speaker guru, Tim Sanders. I believe him to be a person of faith, perhaps because he often speaks at Christian leadership conferences. He has a new book out called “The Likeability Factor.” I think the book sounds interesting enough, and agreed with most of what he said in the interview. Here’s a basic summation of his book.

“Life is a popularity contest,” Sanders says. “We want to work with people that make us feel good to be around them. Likability is the tiebreaker to almost anything.”

Likability is hard to define, but Sanders says people gravitate toward others who deliver psychological benefits. In other words, likability is the ability to produce a positive emotional experience in someone else, such as making co-workers feel good about themselves.

Basically if all things are equal with those around you, (meaning giftings, talents, personal traits, etc..), the ability to be Likeable will push you over the top in your relationships. Think about it like this, Do you know a pastor who always preaches good sound things, and he encourages you when you read his books and listen to his sermons; BUT he seems like a such a out-of-touch ungenuine person. Do you ever secretly wonder, ‘How does he treat his wife?’ or ‘Wonder what he struggles with?’ I do. For me, I care more about how you are when you step off the stage, or come home from the job, than you are when you’re putting on your acting impersonation for everyone to see. The ability to be likeable, or GENUINE, is a much greater talent to hold on to than almost anything. Aren’t we drawn to the most genuine, real, likeable people anyways? I am.

But this brings up an interesting thought. Is it possible for people to be inherently unlikeable? Perhaps I know a few……

Music Tip of the Hour

I like Music. I actually love music. It’s motivates me towards change, it corrects me when I’m out of whack, and it makes me laugh and/or cry. Yet, the only musical ability I have is to turn the volume knob up and down.

In the past week, I’ve stumbled across a musician that I really enjoy. He’s a Christian who doesn’t exactly write Christian music. In fact, if you didn’t know anything about him, you would assume he’s NOT a Christian. I in no way, think I’m the only one to discover him, just that I most recently did.

Sufjan Stevens. He’s kinda an indie-rock, experimental, acoustic, oboe driven musician. Check him out and listen to some of his music. Particulary enjoyable songs for me are ‘Casimir Pulaski Day’, and ‘John Wayne Gacy, Jr.’. Yes, there is a song about John Wayne Gacy, JR; and it has the most blatant spiritual point of any song.

Why Me, Why Me?

Hot, Hot, Hot! Last Monday I return from a short mini-vacation with my family to find my house at a balmy 98degrees. To our horror, the AC had stopped doing it’s intended purpose; and was now filling our home with HOT air. I turned it off and called my Home Warranty company for a service call….. 3 days later a technician arrived at my house to fix the problem. Count it, 3 Hot Days! We slept on the laundry room floor the first night, because we have a window unit in there; then the next night couldn’t live with it and stayed at a local Holiday Inn Express. Trying to find places to take the kids during the day, to avoid the heat was taxing to say the least. Finally last Wednesday afternoon, our AC is fixed and everything is cool again. (no pun intended.)

I say all that to say this….this Monday morning at 4am, I awake in a sticky sweat. I stumble down the hallway, to find my thermostat reading 86degrees! It’s broken AGAIN! Now yesterday in Dallas it rained most all day, and I’m so thankful it did, because it kept the temperatures low enough to not have to leave the house all day. Maybe today, maybe tomorrow we will get our AC fixed, well wait it out and see. Going through this experience makes me wonder how people ever lived without AC? How did they do it? Were there more shade trees back then? I know there are many people in Dallas without functioning AC units, but how do they survive?

And what has this experience proven to me beyond a shadow of a doubt? That I am truly a spoiled little AC baby.

Cohabitation Ceremony

This is the marriage ceremony turned all upside down. Very funny, yet completely honest. From one of my favorite churches in America, lifechurch.tv
