Not My Space

I’ve always had problems with the MySpace phenomenon. I guess I’ve never liked MySpace for the same reasons I’ve never been in to ‘chatting’ online. (I know, I know… I have a blog. But it includes no pictures and I never chat via message postings.) I recently read this article on Dallasnews.com; and it expresses things I’ve always felt about the ‘dangers’ of Internet usage saturation.

Though he’s not anti-technology, Dr. Bugeja often lectures students about “interpersonal intelligence” – knowing when, where and for what purpose technology is most appropriate.

He points out the students he’s seen walking across campus, holding hands with significant others while talking on cellphones to someone else. He’s also observed them in coffee shops, surrounded by people, but staring instead at a computer screen.

“True friends,” he tells them, “need to learn when to stop blogging and go across campus to help a friend.”

The article talks about this one particular guy who closes his Facebook and MySpace accounts to make a statement. Anyways here’s the article I’m referring to. Interesting read.

At the Restored Church of God Ambassador Youth site, Kevin D. Denee writes: Blogs – and God’s Youth.

Very interesting. I also like the article bagofnothing referenced. The discussion about personal blogging being solely for vanity is so true. I think I will go post about it on my personal blog. (Kidding.)

My problem with MySpace is that it bombards me with sexual content, everything from the ads of woman saying, “I want you!” to people who post pornographic pictures. I don’t use it for that very reason. Maybe I’m forgoing a vital aspect of ministry that could be taking place, but my own spiritual health comes first or else I’ll be of no use to anyone. I can’t make an excuse good enough to willfully put things like that before my eyes, ya know?
