Last week I finished Raising Dad, written by Art Rainier, the son, and Thom Rainier, the father. The book is interesting in the aspect that the genesis for the book comes from the middle child of Thom Rainier, Art. Art is a newly married young kid in his early 20′s, with no children of his own. His take on parenting is solely based on his perspective as a child growing up in his parent’s home. That’s a first in any book I’ve ever read about parenting.
Each chapter is written by Art, and then includes a fathers perspective on what his son wrote about. Each chapter is based on important ingredients to a healthy relationship with one’s father. There are some tear-inducing stories about the Rainier family, and to have two perspectives on family life over the course of Art’s life is very interesting to say the least.
Overall, it’s a great glimpse into the Rainer family through both the good and bad times. I enjoyed the stories and anecdotes as both a father of two sons and being a son myself.
