Best Job in The World

Yesterday I was reminded of what a wonderful job I have. Every Summer we have an event every month called, Terrific Tuesday (I know, I know, I inherited the name…) At Terrific Tuesday’s we go somewhere in town just to have fun. Read that again, JUST TO HAVE FUN! There is no spiritual implication beyond just helping kids form relationships with others from church, and gives them something to bring their friends to.

Yesterday we went to Joyland. It’s a great small town amusement park. We rent the entire park for 2 hours, and it’s a great time of riding rides without waiting in line. We took over 100 kids to the park, and even let a few parents come along. I rode roller coasters, I slid down water slides, I drank Capri Suns, I floated in the Sky Lift, and I had a great time. As I was sitting in the Sky Lift I was thinking about how wonderful it is that I have a job that pays me to play with kids. Not all that I do is fun-filled, but when push comes to shove I really do have the best job in the world!

    Ha! That looks like great event. So much fun.

    Yeah, I agree with you on the best job in the world. It reminded me of a funny moment. Several years ago when I was in IN, I started an 8 week long day camp out of our church. I had a director and associate director who ran the camp, so it was necessary for me to see to the day to day details. I did make sure that on Tuesdays and Thursdays I brought my swimming trunks so I could jump on the bus and go to the swimming pool with the kids. That was a fun time… stepping out of my office and telling my admin, “I’ll be out for the next two hours if anyone calls… I’m going swimming.”

    That same summer, my assistant director was a college student who was engaged to be married. He told me one morning about a conversation he had with his fiance the night before. She was telling him how she’d had a pretty rough day and how she was very tired. He echoed her response saying that it had been a long and hard day for him too and he was exhausted. Then he backtracked and said, “who am I kidding, I swam for two hours, rode a go-kart for for a few hours. I played dodgeball, capture the flag and just hung out with kids for most of the day… Yeah, I had a great day!”
