Orange 2010 Finale

April 30, 2010 — Leave a comment

So there it went. The Orange Conference for 2010 is in the books, and I’m packing my bags to head home. I’ll be leaving my old friends, and my new friends; but I’m taking all my ideas with me. Too often we compare these kind of events to trying to drink water from a fire hose. With the obvious meaning, that it will not easily be processed in just one week. I agree, but I also believe that all that I heard this weekend will eventually find it’s place. God knew it was a bunch of information to take in, but he also knows what I needed to hear and when I’ll remember what I heard. I’m thankful for the relationships that were continued this year, the ideas that were challenged, the advice handed out, and for the dreams that this conference will inspire. The future is bright, there is no doubt.

I’m disappointed that I didn’t get to some of my breakouts in time to get a good seat, and I’m disappointed that I didn’t get to hang out at all with my Lubbock Kid Ministry friends, and finally I’m disappointed that I couldn’t bring my entire team to see and hear it all for themselves. In spite of these letdowns, the conference was fantastic! I seriously can’t wait to be back, and experience it all fresh and anew next year!

I’m really excited to read through some new books I bought (#1 Parenting Beyond your Capacity and #2 Slow Fade), and can’t wait to get back home to share with my team the experiences I had. I’m excited about what this conference and trip means for my church, and I hope that as we work to reach the families and kids of Lubbock, TX that God’s blessing and provision stays with us all!

If you are looking for a perfect conference, then keep looking. But if you are looking for a place to meet others, and investigate with your imagination what the future could hold…then register for Orange 2011 today!

Because I’ve covered the 5 parenting skills in a million ways on this site before, I will not go into too much detail on this breakout. This breakout was led by Carey Nieuwhof and Reggie Joiner, and it is based on the book they’ve released here at Orange.  The book is called “Parenting Beyond Your Capacity”

Parents too often forget to have a strategy for the spiritual lives of their kids

Remember the 5 Values?

  1. Widen the Circle
  2. Imagine the End
  3. Fight for the Heart
  4. Create a Rhythm
  5. Make it Personal

The biggest takeaway: God isn’t to be used like the fine china.  He’s holy and all-powerful, but the’s as available as anyone anywhere!  We need to work our lives around Jesus, not treat him as something to only bring out every once in a while.

By far my favorite breakout this year was taught by Pastor Larry L. Thompson of First Baptist in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.  Larry taught on influencing transition and the five circles of change.  He has about three pages worth of notes, so I’m going to attempt to bring you the best of what I heard:

One of the greatest traits of a leader is the ability to transition people through change.

5 Keys to Influence Transition

  1. Common Sense
    • People respect and respond to a leader you uses common sense led by the Holy Spirit.
  2. Compatability
    • Is the change and transition compatible with the core values of the organization?
  3. Complexity
    • The changes has to be simply understood.  If it’s too complex, people will jump ship.
  4. Connectivity
    • Let people see, feel, smell, touch, and taste the change.
    • People will resist the unknow, let them know!
  5. Courage

5 Circles of Change

  1. Change Agent // The Inspector // Determine the situation, develop the vision, and discover the need for change.
  2. Main Person // The Input // Give vision to the main person in a personal way.
  3. Decision Maker // The Influencer // Respect their influence.
  4. Those Most Involved // Those Involved // Provide them the opportunity to “test-drive” change
  5. The Members // Intention // Be careful in timing this well…
