Why I Sponsor a Child with Compassion International

For my wife’s birthday this March, we sponsored a child through Compassion International.  Manuu lives in India, and is very close in age to my oldest son.  We know that he lives in a very rural area of India, and his mother is unemployed and his father is sometimes employed as a farmer.   We have worked hard to make Manuu a part of our family by teaching our kids about where he lives, and what his life may be like.  (See the India Family Night…)

I don’t know if I’ll ever meet with Manuu.  I know he can’t actually read the letters we write to him, but I know that by making my monthly support to Compassion International I am helping in some small way.

When I watched this video from the Catalyst Conference, I started thinking that my help might not be so small after all.  Maybe it can make a difference.  Jimmy Wambua from Kenya met Mark, his Compassion Sponsor of 19 years, for the 1st time on stage. It was an unbelievable moment (Jimmy begins to share at minute 3:45).  Take the time to see the impact that Mark had on this young man from Kenya.

Take the time to visit Compassion.com and see what you can do to support a child.

My U2 360 Concert Experience

About five years ago I was reintroducing myself to the music of U2.  I knew there was some more meaning behind the music than I was getting, and needed the U2 101 class to really appreciate them more.  I knew of a guy running a blog at www.bagofnothing.com who was a MAJOR U2 fan, so I emailed him asking for some song recommendations from U2.  In about a weeks time I instead received a package in the mail full of U2 music, with a song list and reasons why each song meant something to him (and everyone else as well.)  It was a powerful way to learn new music, and it began a love affair with the music of U2.  Keith and I have become good friends since our first online conversations, and while I don’t live in the same town as him, work the same type of job, or have much in common besides being the same age; I’d consider him a good friend.  He would be welcome at my house anytime.

Now fast forward to Sunday afternoon when I get a phone call from him asking if I’d like to attend the U2 concert with him on Monday night.  His wife was under the weather and unable to attend. :(

Did I ask where the seats were?  NO!  Did I ask if he was serious?  YES!  I confirmed that I could leave town for a few days, and then made my plans to race to Dallas for the concert.  I met Keith at his house, where he also let me sleep after the concert and drink one of his Cokes (such a nice guy, huh?)  We hung out with his wife for an hour or so, then headed to the show.

We got there early enough for us to get the full Cowboys Stadium experience and to grab our seats.  Our seats.  Oh boy, our seats!  They weren’t actually seats.  Keith had gotten RedZone tickets, which enabled us to stand right next to the catwalk and stage area.  I freaking stood 5 feet away from Bono and the Edge at a U2 concert!  I watched the Edge play the guitar lick from “Where the Streets Have No Name” from 5  feet away!  This stage was ginormous, and was a technological marvel.  I can’t begin to describe this stage, so I won’t.

Thanks to Keith for making a dream I didn’t know I had come true.  This easily makes one of my top 10 lifetime experiences, and I owe it to a buddy who thought to call me when his wife wasn’t able to make it to the show.

And yes.  I’m posting the pictures and really lame videos to rub it in.  I am not above that.  Sorry.

My Occasional Friday Bag of Nothing

godlovesnow

It’s true.  I got an iPhone last week.  I’d say my phone to Internet usage is at a 5% to 95% ratio.  Meaning I’m on the phone about 5% of the time I have this phone.  I guess I’m not a big talker, huh?

This phone is awesome, and my fingers have already gotten accustomed to the touch screen.  Coming from a Treo 700wx, this phone is super-awesome.  That Treo was TERRIBLE!

I settled on a case from Switcheasy.com.  I have the CapsuleNEO case (in black, although Sam Luce would roll with white and be proud of it.)  It took me 15 minute to get the darn thing on, but now I’m rolling with the coolest case ever.

So do you have to use a screen protector on the iPhone 3GS?  It has the olephobic screen that is smudge-free.  While I awaited my SwitchEasy Pure Anti-Reflect screen covers I really fell in love with the perfect non-smudge screen that is on the already on the iPhone.  I put on the Anti-Reflect screen when it came in the mail, and immediantly hated it!  I then put on a normal screen protector, and it’s smudge city.  There seems to be a big debate on the worthiness of screen protectors on iPhones.  What do you think?  I’m thinking of running mine without screen protectors…

I think Sam Luce is intimidated by my Apple product usage.  I’m just sayin’

I’ve put in my formal request to attend The Orange Conference in April.  I’ll be waiting and hoping we have the funds to make it happen for me…and maybe my #kidmin team.  I don’t know if I’ll be live blogging from Orange this year, but I’d still really like to go and meet up with all my Orange buddies.

Can I just go on record and say that I have the most awesome Children’s Ministry Team in the world.  These women (that’s right I’m the only man!) do a wonderful job of making me look great.  I know that’s not an ambition of theirs, just to make me look good.  But it happens everyday!  I get more credit for the genius of my team, than I’m comfortable with.

Our Parent Sunday totally rocked last week!  I’m still so excited that we had so many 1st grade parents hanging out with us in Kidsplace.  If you’re a 1st Grade Kidsplace parent, then you missed out!

This Sunday morning during our largest and latest service, we will be dedicating 25 children from 20 families.  These parents have made a HUGE commitment to be spiritual leaders in their homes, and I’m so excited to introduce them to the congregation of Trinity Church.  Be there at 11:30am on Sunday to see it all for yourself!  It’s gonna be AWESOME!  Next week I’ll be posting all about Child Dedications, so stay tuned.

We’ve got the Trinity Church Fall Festival coming up on Saturday, October 31st.  Usually I count on about 80 Texas Tech sorority girls to come work the event, but with a Tech home football game that starts at the same time…that’s not gonna happen.  If you’re in and around Lubbock, and don’t have kids; then go signup now!  http://www.trinitytoday.com/fallfestivalvolunteer We’ll have a 1,000 kiddos running around, and I don’t want to ask my parents to work the event!  Help!!

Because of my IT management background, I’ve been able to be a part of the interview process for Trinity’s IT manager position.  We are in desperate need of someone to take us to a new level technologically, and it pays well!  I’ve met with 4 candidates, and after I get some distance from this whole process I feel a “What not to do in a job interview!” post coming up.  Seriously.

I’ve been sick this week.  I’m not gonna die.  I’m just a man in need of sympathy and wanted to throw that out there and see who might bite.

Does it make me a nerd to get into a debate with this guy, about whether Superman could defeat Darth Vader?  Just typing that helps me know the answer.  Nevermind.

The Four Ways

Number_4

Earlier this week I wrote about finding your source before you find your purpose. It’s a great a misstep to think that if we fill our lives with activities, objectives, and functions that eventually we’ll discover our purpose.  Purpose must preceed the planning!

The key is in knowing God and allowing Him to determine and direct your life. It all starts with knowing Him.  How can we find purpose without knowing God?  You can’t.  We need to concern ourselves with what God concerns himself with.  Then, and only then, will God’s purpose for us be revealed.

Now that we’ve established this important principle, let’s look at the four different ways that we can begin to find purpose.  I’m sure my readers are smart enough to figure it out, but three of them are wrong and only one is right:

1.   Deduction -These are the people that live their entire lives without purpose or direction.  They live with no thought to what they are doing or why.  They have decided to live their lives until the end, and then “add up the score” at the end.  Think of it as “postmortem purpose.”

When I was in college I volunteered at the local Hospice.  Being a perfectly unqualified 19 year old, I then sat by the deathbeds of men and women and listened to them talk of their lives.  I remember one lady in particular that was so upset because she couldn’t figure out what she wanted said at her funeral.  She had never taken the time to find her purpose, and instead sat on her deathbed drying to deduce what it might have been.  What a sad way to live.

2Association -Purpose gained through various associations: family, neighborhood, friends, school, churches, etc…  These are great purposes, that are worth supporting and furthering.  But rather than develop personal purpose, these people simply comply with the corporate purpose.  Think of it as “adopted purpose.”

3Emulation -Looking to “heroic figures” or other individuals whom they seek to pattern their lives after.  Easily seen in hair styles, fashion, language, etc…  I see this in my kids, as they will mimic my tone of voice, hand motions, and act like they love the things I love.  Until of course I eat some grilled asparagus, then they distance.  Think of Emulation as “vicarious purpose.”

These three ways of finding purpose all have one things in common.  They’re all EASY.  None of them require great thought or ambition.  If you live your life by deduction, association, or emulation; you will experience burnout and tend to blame others for your own failures and disappointments.

4Personalization -Developing personal convictions.  Correct purpose is not determined by technique, but by the source.  When a statement of Godly purpose on a personal level is derived, fulfillment follows!  Think of it as “individual purpose.”  God has something that is unique to you as in individual.  You’re different, and it’s time we look at our differences as our strength!

To establish Godly purpose depends upon knowing God intimately, and in order to know God one must apply the Scriptures.

John 14:21 “Those who know my commands and obey them are the ones who love me, and my Father will love those who love me. I will love them and will show myself to them.”

Are you actively seeking His will?  Are you intimate with His Word?  Have you asked for purpose?

The Friday Bag

Tony Kummer is a big fan of jonathancliff.com. He’s posted on his widely-read blog that I’m #1.  Of course, my wife and children already knew I was #1; but now the world knows.  My fear is that now he’s set me up for failure.  I’ve watched Behind the Music on VH1, and if I follow that model for success then I’m sure drug use or inappropriate words to the press will follow.  I hope I recover in time for this Sunday morning.  (Thanks Tony!)

I’ve been car shopping this week.  For those NOT in the know, my beautiful, talented, intelligent, wonderful and loving wife crashed my car last week.  It’s totaled, and now I get to take my pennies and look for something else.  I loathe car shopping, ranking it up there with medical procedures that involve my doctor putting gloves on.  I know that not every car salesman is an evil person, but I need someone to redeem their kind.

Speaking of that wife of mine, have you read her thoughts on the crash?  She’s an A+ writer, and knocks it out of the park with her Sinking post on lostinlaundry.com.  There is even a church in Oklahoma that read the post verbatim to their congregation last Sunday.  Amazing!

I’m 2 weeks into Financial Peace University with Dave Ramsey at our church.  Starr and I are taking it together, and it’s really kicking my butt.  I’m a very frugal person, then again I’m not.  But I really am, but I guess I’m really not.  The one thing I’ve learned in 2 weeks is that I want to have more control over my financial life.  We’ll see how that goes.

I’m 43 days into a 90 day project.  I’ve only missed one day and I blame Kenny Conley and his wife for it. (However I forgive them for the nice gifts they brought me.)  I fill you in when I’m finished.  Don’t worry, it’s perfectly legal.

I just posted my thoughts yesterday, but it’s been a strange week talking to High School students at their school chapel.  Very, very different.  I think I’m gonna grow a soul patch on my chin to fit in better next time…or maybe not.

I’ve been sending out my Kidsplace Unscripted training videos on Vimeo to my volunteer team for about 5 months now, and I think I’ve hit a wall.  I send them through constantcontact.com so I can see who has opened it and viewed the video.  Where I had a 100% watch rate 3 months ago, I know am down to about 25%.  I’ve got to mix it up a little, but need some suggestions.  Got any?

I’ve made some major changes to the Child Dedication process at Trinity.  For the past 45 years at our church, parents have dedicated their kids by walking them up front for prayer at the special “dedication service.”  This year I’m attempting to be more intentional about what parents take away from the experience, and have set some hoops up for families to jump through before dedicating them.  I had quite a few people tell me it would never work, and families don’t want to attend a class, meet certain conditions, etc…; but they’ve been proven wrong.  My goal was 5 families, and sitting with 5 more days to register…I have 14 families signed up!  Thank you Jesus!
