Happy Birthday Lauryn!

Today my third kid is turning 2 years old. Lauryn is my only girl, having been preceded in birth order by her two brothers; Ryan and Dylan. Having two boys in the house to start my parenting lessons has been an adventure. Ryan and Dylan generally run into everything with their heads, and climb most anything that is within reaching distance. They are both so different, but they are both 100% boy! Lauryn however is, and has always been, 100% girl. She flirts with tomboyish behavior, returning hits from her brothers with her own feminine ferociousness, but for the most part there is no mistaking the difference between her and the boys.

Without a prompting from me or Starr, Lauryn has shown us both that girls are just different. She babies everything she can get her hands on, sings Night-Night songs to her brother’s Superman figurines, and prances around the house with her mother’s shoes on. The only time you can get her to sit still for long periods is when Starr paints her toenails. And those painted toenails become a source of pride for days to come, with her showing anyone who will take the time to look. One of the dangers when taking Lauryn to any store, is to avoid walking within sight distance of the shoe department. Shoes! My boys liked new shoes, but my girl has taken it to a new level. Shoes might be one of the things that bring her the most joy. If you need to take her somewhere, just mention that she gets to wear shoes; and she’ll run to her room and have her shoes on in seconds ready to head out the door.

This year Lauryn has learned to walk, she has learned many new words, and she’s learned that play jewelry is a girls best friend. However, the greatest lesson learned this year by me is that raising a girl is one of the most adventurous things anyone can do. (I know, I know, “Wait til they’re teenagers…”) Everyday I see things that she does and am reminded that having a daughter might be the greatest gift ever given to my family. Happy Birthday Lauryn!

Bizarro Fun

As I sit here tonight, planning for a busy day of activities on Sunday; I’m drawn to the oddness of Bizarro comics and decided to share one of my new favorites. I’m doing communion tomorrow during all three adult services, I’m performing on stage during the large kid’s service at church, and I have an afternoon birthday party for my daughter Lauryn. With all these things happening in my life, sometimes I need to take a break and laugh at the ‘just plain silly’ parts of life. This comic reminds me of how shallow I feel like my blog is sometimes. I read many, many, many blogs and sometimes I walk away thinking I may possibly be the least spiritual pastoral blogger on the Internet. Anyways…

Undaunted Courage

Book Cover

“Of courage undaunted, possesing a firmness & perseverance of purpose which nothing but impossibilities could divert from it’s direction,”
-Thomas Jefferson, commenting on Meriwether Lewis

I just finished one of the largest reading projects I’ve ever undertaken (besides Tolkien and C.S. Lewis readings.) Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose is a truly fascinating read. I love reading biographies, but any biography that numbers 521 pages has to be really, really fascinating to keep my attention. Undaunted Courage is about Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and the opening of the American West.

If you’ve ever wondered how the Corps of Discovery and the Lewis & Clark Expedition came to be, and what they really accomplished on their big jaunt to the Pacific Ocean; then please read this book! It’s an amazing, un-biased look at everything relating to Meriwether Lewis. I’ve read the Lewis and Clark journals before, and this book makes those finally come to life in my mind. I can see the reasons now behind every decision Lewis made, and what influenced him to be the great leader he was.

As a leader, I encourage this to others in leadership. There is so much to be learned from a man that planned such an awesome adventure, led his men as a valiant Captain, discovered things previously undiscovered (and undocumented) to the white man, journaled most details relating to this trip, came home a National Hero, yet killed himself within 3 years of returning. Lewis life is a tragic example of an unevolving leadership style, but I’ll let you read the book for exactly what it was that he did so wrong.

This is my favorite quote by Meriwether Lewis, and he wrote it in his journal on his 31st birthday.

“This day I completed my thirty first year, and conceived that I had in all human probability now existed about half the period which I am to remain in this Sublunary world. I reflected that I had as yet done but little, very little, indeed, to further the happiness of the human race, or to advance the information of the succeeding generation. I viewed with regret the many hours I have spent in indolence, and now soarly feel the want of that information which those hours would have given me had they been judiciously expended. but since they are past and cannot be recalled, I dash from me the gloomy thought, and resolved in future, to redouble my exertions and at least endeavour to promote those two primary objects of human existence, by giving them the aid of that portion of talents which nature and fortune have bestowed on me: or in future, to live for mankind, as I have heretofore lived for myself.”
-Meriwether Lewis, on his 31st birthday

Happy Happy Day

Happy Birthday to my wife! Today we’re celebrating her last birthday. Not because she won’t be here when she turns 30, but apparently we stop counting at 29.

Happy Birthday my love!

Metrosexual Tendencies

For my birthday this year my wife bought me a shirt and some shoes. I really like it when my wife picks out clothes for me, since it cuts down on the shopping for me. This year, and especially over the past few years, my wife has begun bringing home some clothes that I really do like; but would never intentionally purchase for myself. She’s bought purple, blazing orange and some wild colors over the years; and usually I wear them and see what kind of response I get.

Well this year’s purchase might have pushed me into the dreaded Metrosexual realm. (For those of you unfamiliar with the label of a metrosexual, click here.{updated link}) This year she bought me a nice black, button-up, short sleeved shirt. The thing is that it has this grey design coming up over the shoulder of the shirt and onto the back. The shirt is really cool looking. The problem is me. I’m a t-shirt and jeans kind of guy, and everyone around me knows it. Not that I dress badly, but I never buy ‘outfits.’ I just buy shirts and pants, but never ‘outfits.’ When I walked into the office with this shirt on, the teasing began. Not because the shirt is bad, but because everyone knows it’s not really a ‘littlepastor thing.’

Change isn’t all bad, though. I’ve decided that since I’m exposing my Metrosexual side that I’m going to begin shopping at the Express for all my pants, and I might begin to pay more than $12.95 for my haircuts. Anyone know a good place to get a masculine pedicure in North Texas?
