Scared of the dark

My kids are all very good sleepers, but there are always exceptions. Last night, my middle child, Dylan was scared of something. What exactly he was scared of I’m not quite sure. Maybe the dark, maybe the night light, maybe the huge blow up inflatable ball pit his Mother put in their room last night, who knows…

But at 2:30am, my son is panicking and needing some comfort. So I sit on the couch until he calms down, and then lay him in his bed. After getting back to my bed, and getting all settled in, I hear his cries again. So I get up and sit on his bed for a few minutes, until I’m certain he’s gone back to sleep. After getting back to my my bed, and getting settled in, I hear his cries again. Let’s just say this repeated for 45 minutes, before I just got in bed with him. Which of course has left me with the worst crick in my neck that I’ve ever had!

I can remember when my kids first started having nightmares, it was so scary for me. What could be so horrible? We don’t watch scary-type movies, nor have my kids ever really been scared of something in real life, but they would wake up screaming and kicking and sweating in a total panic. I’ve always wondered if maybe they’re having nightmares that Mommy put grape jelly on their PB&J instead of strawberry!

This makes me uncomfortable, being G-Rated. Makes me sound boring, which I am, but that’s not the point. Aren’t some Pixar Movies rated PG? I’m not as bad as The Incredibles?

Christmas Movie Madness

Had a great Christmas trip to Oklahoma to spend some time with the family. While I was with family, I was afforded something I rarely get here in Dallas… Free Babysitting. As a result I was able to see three movies this week, and all of them at the theatre no less. If you have children, and live in a city with relatives to watch your kids at various times, then you can NOT relate to my frustration. I have three kids, and paying a babysitter for 3-4 hours so my wife and I can go out is sometimes more expensive than the dinner and the movie. So I enjoyed the presence of grandparents and got away a few times to watch some movies.

Some Random Movie Thoughts:

  1. When did movies start charging $9.00 a ticket? Am I that old? $9.00 is CRAZY!
  2. Is there anything more annoying that sitting by Jr.High students during a movie? I’m sure I was the same way when I was 14, but geesh!
  3. Is it unrealistic that if I go to see a movie that is listed as starting at 10:30pm, that I should expect it to start close to 10:30pm? The movie that was supposed to start at 10:30pm, actually started at 10:55pm after 25 minutes of previews and commercials. When the movies are going on 2 hours long, I don’t want to lose that 25 minutes.
  4. And at $9.00 a ticket, should I be forced to watch Coca-Cola ads and previews for what’s coming on TV in the new Spring Season? Just give me two or three movie previews and get on with the business of the actual movie.
  5. With all the movie trivia that exist out there, couldn’t the movie theatres come up with more than a 7 minute loop of trivia for pre-movie entertainment? Although it can make you look smart when you wife has been in the bathroom, and doesn’t know that you already saw who was the boom mic operator for Citizen Kane.
  6. I saw ‘We Are Marshall‘, and my only question is… Why is the director named McG? In what alternative universe is the name ‘McG‘ acceptable?
  7. Will Smith was great in ‘Pursuit of Happyness‘, but I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a more depressing movie. I mean, even though it ended on a high note, I couldn’t get over all the terrible things that happened to this man. At one point, I started to think that if him and his boy just got hit by a bus, at least their suffering would be over. And I’m not normally that depressing.
  8. And finally, I must say that I was pleasantly surprised by Rocky Balboa. It is truly a great movie. It’s sad that so many will not go see it because it’s Rocky 6. It’s wonderful, and makes you leave the theatre happy. What more could you ask for out of a movie?

The Moment

We all have those moments that forever alter our existence. For some it’s the time they discovered that mixing hot water with cold water creates warm water, while for others it might be that winning lottery ticket. I have a moment that would change EVERYTHING about my life from that moment forward.

On November 20, 1993 I was a 17-year old Senior in high school, and I had a very important date with an interesting 15-year old Sophomore girl I had met weeks earlier. This date was like many dates kids have in high school; it consisted of a terrible movie, a lame dinner, and holding hands in the mall. But unlike most other high school dates, I still wake up next to my date these 13 years later. I know, I know, many of my readers cringe at the thought of being married to a girl you dated in High School, but I can guarantee you that this high school girl was very different.

To summarize my first date in as few words as possible let me throw out some facts from this date:

  1. I commented to this girl that I was surprised how much food she ate at dinner. (Honestly I wasn’t even thinking that this is a taboo subject around girls, I just was shocked that she devoured that taco salad like she did. And I really thought it was cool that she didn’t pick at her food.)
  2. When getting out of my car to go to the movies, I slammed her hand in the car door. (For first daters I can recommend this move if you want to hold your dates hand for a while.)
  3. I went to the mall thinking that the movie theatre was within, only to find out that it was across the street. (Again, this provided a nice place to walk while holding my dates swollen hand.)
  4. After arriving at the correct movie theatre and waiting in line in the freezing cold… I got sick! I mean run to the bathroom at-this-very-moment sick. (So in my wisdom I handed some cash to my date, and said “I’ll meet you inside.”)
  5. Let me summarize the movie in only Three Little Words: Addams Family Values. (I might have been the only person in the world to have a second date after taking a girl to see this movie.)

Let’s just state the obvious. My first date with the future Mrs. LittlePastor was a colossal failure. However, I learned something very valuable about this girl when I returned to school the next day. She hadn’t told anyone about all the dumb things I did. This is priceless! I actually met a girl that didn’t get kicks out of making me look stupid. I could do this perfectly on my own, with no assistance necessary.

So on the 13th year anniversary of that terrible, yet most wonderful of dates I say to my wife of 8 years. I love you Starr. Thanks for the second date, and the third, and the fourth, and the……

The Movie Spoiler

Don’t have a lot of time today, but I wanted to post a link regarding the topic from yesterday about how a minister keeps up on popular culture. I forgot to let you know about the greatest movie source I’ve ever found.

THE Movie Spoiler

This website is the best! It is full of semi-detailed transcripts from all of the most popular movies in the theathres. Some of the spoilers can be graphic in their writing, but it does allow you to see what a movie is about without having to go expose your eyes to such terrible things. Sometimes it’s just fun to read what everyone is talking about, without having to go pay money for a movie I really don’t care anything about. Anyways….
