Give Me The Change

There is change coming at the church in 2008. And really, who could use more change than the church in general? Specifically at my church, there has been some shakeup on the Executive Board, and some re shifting of ministry departments. The change is all good, and nobody has been fired or released. The leadership is simply trying to put some leaders back into their ministry specialties and out of their current business administration positions. The change affects my areas significantly, as my leader/authority/boss is taking over another area of the church. We are now in the hiring process for a new director of Family Life Ministries, to whom I would report. There will always be fear where there is an unknown; but I’m really excited about the change. Change excites me, because I know that it can be the ignition for great things.

Speaking of change; I just had to see what Demotivation poster was available for such a topic.

The Power of Saying Thank You

I have an nice little Monday morning tradition. Every Monday morning I sit at my desk and handwrite two or three Thank You cards to different volunteers in our different children’s ministry areas. One letter is usually just chosen off a list of volunteers that worked that particular week, and the other letter is sent to someone that I noticed doing something GREAT during that particular weekend. My motivation is two-fold; first I want those on my ministry team to know that they are doing a great job and second I want them to know that I am extremely thankful for what they do for all the families at our church. I’ve been doing this for 3+ years now, and it’s not the be all to end all, but it’s proven remarkably effective at getting people to join with you in ministry.

I say all that to say that this month is Pastor Appreciation Month. Did you know that? Everywhere I’ve ever worked, I’ve been noticed a few times for Pastor Appreciation events; but the church here in Lubbock has blown me away. I’ve received almost 8 handwritten Thank You letters in the past 2 weeks, and some of them make me want to cry. While I’m a regular Thank You note writer, I rarely receive such things. (Working in Children’s Ministry makes it easy to live a humble existence.) Knowing how some parents have such a positive view of what my ministry team and I are doing is so encouraging! It gets me excited about the future, and confirms for me that God is using us to reach the families in our church and neighborhood.

But I do have one problem. All these wonderful letters has made me wonder if I should write a Thank You note for their nice Thank You note?

Terrific Tuesday

Today I had the opportunity to take the kids at the church to Joyland Amusement Park. It was for the first Summer 2007 Terrific Tuesday at Trinity church. It’s a cool event, and we do 3 each summer. Anyways, I took 60+ kids to Joyland today. It was my first visit to this old amusement park, and I walk away being slightly impressed with how nice it was. Of course, we had the entire park to ourselves, so it couldn’t help but look slightly clean.

I’m not much of the coaster and spinning ride fan; but I rode a few coasters and mostly watched kids have a blast. About 2 hours in, we had our first puker. She rode the ‘spider’, which is basically a spinning, twisting, and nausea inducing ride. She felt bad, and tried to fix it with some snack bar food. What follows was predictable, and gross. I love kids, really I do. One of the things I love about kids is there unbelievable ability to bounce back from things. Within minutes our puker was back on the rides, and going 100 mph. I asked her if she was all right, and her response made me laugh.

“Pastor Jonathan, I’m fine… really. But I won’t be getting on the spider again!”
